Anaesthesia & Pain Management
Anaesthesia is the loss of sensation, which could be just in part of the body or full loss of consciousness. The team will ensure your pet is unconscious and pain-free while performing diagnostic investigations and surgery, and will monitor vital parameters to ensure they are normal, and support breathing and circulation, if necessary. A good quality anaesthetic is crucial for a rapid and pain-free recovery.
BOAS Airway Clinic
BOAS, or “Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome” is a disease of the upper airways, predominantly found in brachycephalic or short faced animals. The term BRACHYCEPHALIC means “short skull” or, by definition, where skull width is greater than 80% of its length. There are many different brachycephalic breeds of dog, varying in shape and size from the smallest pom to the larger mastiff.
Dermatology
Dermatology deals with skin and ear conditions, which are extremely common in small animal veterinary practice. Many skin conditions are not completely curable and can be challenging to manage, and can significantly impact on the quality of life of both pet and owner. Happily, most dermatology conditions can be successfully controlled for the life of the animal, without concerns regarding side effects from the ongoing need for medication.
Diagnostic Imaging
Diagnostic Imaging describes the techniques available to visualise the inside of the body and is central to many, if not all, of the cases that we will see. What type of imaging used is on a case-by-case basis, depending on the likely disease present, the area of the body and the requirement for sedation or general anaesthesia. Sometimes we use more than one imaging modality, e.g. detecting affected lymph nodes on CT and then sampling them with the help of ultrasound.
Internal Medicine
“Internal Medicine” is the area of clinical work that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of problems of a patient’s internal organs, such as the kidneys, liver, lungs, gastrointestinal system and the blood and bone marrow. Internal Medicine Specialists are often referred to as “detectives” or “puzzle solvers”, as many patients present either with very non-specific problems, or with problems that suggest one organ when actually a different body system has the abnormality.
Neurology & Neurosurgery
The Neurology service is responsible for the investigation and management of all problems arising from the nervous system – this includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves and (in some cases) the muscles. As opposed to human doctors, veterinary neurologists manage both medical and surgical neurological conditions, making it a very varied speciality. Common problems include epilepsy, meningitis, brain and spinal tumours, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and congenital nervous system malformations.
Oncology
Oncology refers to the assessment and treatment of animals with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of a tumour or cancer. We understand that this can be a very difficult and emotional time, but we are here to explain, discuss, guide and support you to choose what are the best options for you and your pet. At all times we will place the welfare of your pet at the forefront of the decisions we make.
Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft Tissue Surgery refers to surgery of the muscles, soft tissues, including internal organs and skin, and indeed most surgeries that do not primarily involve bones (orthopaedics), the nervous system (neurology) or the eyes (ophthalmology). This makes it a very interesting area as it covers a wide variety of procedures ranging from tumour removal to chest surgery, from ear surgery to abdominal procedures. Examples of different types of soft tissue surgery are listed below but we perform many more than just these examples.
